Creation of the First Mobile Phone
The Swedish police were the first people to use mobile phones in 1946. The phone was located in the police car and could connect to a network that would link them with the intended receiver. It was very similar to two way radio. However it was very inefficient as it could only be used 6 times before the car battery died. The development of cell phone technology began when D.H. Ring from Bell Labs created the hexagonal cell. This effectively split parts of the United States into different subdivisions. Each cell runs off of different frequencies to prevent interference and has stations that transmit the conversations to other cells. The video below shows an interview with the creator of the cell phone.(History of Cell Phones)
Development of the First Cell Phone (1st Generation)
The first cell phone was created by the Motorola Corporation in 1983. It was the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X model. This phone had taken around 15 years to develop and cost around $100 million dollars to develop.(History of Cell Phones) From 1983 to the end of the 1980s cell phone sales took off due to the innovations in cellular networks. The networks were able to transfer the call from one hexagonal cell to another.(History of Cell Phones) However the majority of mobile phones were not meant to be carried around but instead where fitted to your car. This meant that family members who lived far away could suddenly reconnect with each other while drivings. No longer did they have to be home to talk to people that lived far away. They also could make plans with someone and call them when they were there as there phones were located with them rather than tied to one location. This meant that when you took your car somewhere you could have a way to communicate while driving.
Devolopment of the Second Generation Phones
Second generation phones are considered to be phones from the early 1990s. They were built with digital circuit transmissions which would allow quicker network signalling, lowered the amount of dropped calls, and increased the call quality.(History of Cell Phones) Phones that come from the second generation were much smaller than the phones of the first generation. This lead to them to be more popular and cell phone sales rose dramatically. With the rise of cell phone sales people begun to have more mobility in their daily lives. They also were able to make plans on the move as they no longer had to be at home to call other people. Furthermore emergencies could be better handled as the authorities can be notified much quicker. However there are several aspects of our lives that did were negatively impacted. One of these aspects was our reliance on technology began to become slaves to our technology as we are always looking at our phones waiting for a call. Furthermore they are hazardous to driving.
